Bur Oak
Quercus macrocarpa
The Bur Oak features very large acorns, a stout trunk, and a broad, rounded, open crown of stout, spreading branches. It is sometimes referred to as a Prairie Oak. The Bur Oak tolerates drought and flooding.

Importance to Wildlife:
In the midwest, the Bur Oak is a pioneer tree, bordering and invading the prairie grassland.
Unique Information:
Bur Oak is the northern most New World Oak.
Native Range:
Nova Scotia to Pennsylvania, west to Manitoba and Texas.
Habitat:
From dry uplands on limestone and gravelly ridges, sandy plains, and loamy slopes to moist floodplains of streams; often nearly pure stands.
Uses:
Bur Oak is planted for shade, ornament and shelterbelts.
