Overcup Oak
Quercus lyrata
The common name is derived from the cup that almost completely encloses the nut. It is well suited for planting in poorly drained urban sites. A strong tree with stout branching.

Importance to Wildlife: The acorns of the Overcup Oak supply mast for wildlife.
Unique Information: The Latin species name, meaning "lyre-shaped," refers to the leaves.
Native Range: Delaware to NW. Florida, west to E Texas, and north to S.Illinois; to 500 Ft. (152m), sometimes slightly higher.
Habitat: Wet clay and silty clay soils, mostly on poorly drained flood plains and swamp borders; sometimes in pure stands.
Uses: Excellent as a shade or ornamental tree because it grows well even on difficult sites. Not considered a valuable tree for lumber.
