A handsome tree with a symmetrical conical to rounded crown and brilliant russet-red colored leaves in fall. Leaves remain on the tree throughout the fall and winter.

Unique Information: The Shingle Oak's Latin species name (meaning "overlapping") and its common name both refer to the pioneers' use of its wood for shingles.
Native Range: Pennsylvania south to North Carolina, west to Arkansas, and north to S. Iowa and S. Michigan; local in Louisiana and Alabama; to 2000 Ft.
Habitat: Moist soils along streams and in uplands; scattered with Post and Black Oaks.
Uses: The wood of the Shingle Oak was used to make the shingles on houses.
